U.S. Gold $10 Liberty 1866-1907

Lot Photo Description Realized
Lot 2339
1866-S $10 Gold Liberty. With motto. NGC graded AU-50. Rich golden surfaces that display faint hairlines but ample luster. Typical abrasions found in the fields but no major marks or scratches. Struck from the same obverse die used to strike the 1866-S No Motto issue. There are two issues in the eagle series for the year 1866, the No Motto and With Motto. Of the two, the 1866-S With Motto has a higher mintage of 11,500 and is a tad more available than the No Motto issue. Regardless of being slightly more available, the 1866-S With Motto is still a serious rarity and much sough after issue. NGC has graded 16 in this grade and 12 finer, the finest being a single AU-58 example.
Estimated Value $4,000 - 5,000.

Lot 2340
Condition Census 1868 Gold Eagle Rarity. NGC graded AU-58. Near mint state detail with rich gold coloration and radial luster. A touch of reflectivity to the fields and some original mint frost in recessed areas of the devices. All of the With Motto eagles from 1866 through 1873 (Closed 3) had low mintages and Condition Census survivors generally are in the choice AU range. The 1868, with a recorded mintage of 10,730, has the largest mintage of any Philadelphia eagle produced from 1866-1873. With that said, do not be fooled into thinking that this issue is easy to locate in the choice AU range. In fact, neither PCGS or NGC has ever graded an uncirculated example and only a single AU-58 example has been graded by PCGS. With 13 AU-58 examples supposedly graded at NGC, we have a feeling several of the reported survivors are resubmission errors from dealers/collectors hoping for an uncirculated grade. One thing is for sure, the present 1868 is a Condition Census example of a tough year, and time frame, for eagles. Identified by a vertical nick left of star 2 and a scuff near star 3, into the field.
Estimated Value $4,500 - 5,000.

1874 $10 Gold Liberty. NGC graded MS-60. A scarce "With Motto" eagle struck between two of the biggest rarities in the eagles series, the 1873 and 1875. While the 1874 is nowhere as tough to locate as the aforementioned "big-boys", mint state survivors are rare. The surfaces are light golden yellow and lustrous, even across the cheek. Reverse surfaces are semi-prooflike with radial luster.

1876-CC $10 Gold Liberty. ICG graded EF-40 Winter 1-A. Light yellow gold surfaces with orange gold highlights. The hair is softly struck above the ear and the tips of the wings. Overall, the fields are above average with regards to abrasions. Some light cleaning occurred long ago but has now softened. Only 4,696 eagles were struck at the Carson City Mint in 1876 and this issue is a serious rarity and should be considered a key date for Carson City eagles. Almost all examples come with abraded surfaces and survivors above EF are very rare.

1888-O $10 Gold Liberty. PCGS graded MS-62. The 1888-O is often overlooked as a date because of the gap in time between the scarce and undervalued 1880-1883 New Orleans issues and the issuance of the 1888-O. While the 1888-O is not nearly as rare as the aforementioned rarities from the early 1880's, only 21,335 coins were produced in 1888 and examples are very rare in MS-63. The present coin is flashy and light yellow gold in appearance. There is a short diagonal scratch on the cheek. The reverse has delicate die cracks that are concentric and complete a full circle through all the reverse lettering. Overall an appealing and scarce New Orleans eagle. PCGS has graded 78 in MS-62, 15 in MS-63 and a single MS-64 as finest (PCGS # 8713) .

1889 $10 Gold Liberty. PCGS graded AU-55. The 1889 eagle is a total sleeper date and has the lowest mintage of any Liberty Head Philadelphia eagle from the 1880's until the end of production in the early 20th century. Only 4,400 coins were produced and this issue is scarce in all grades. The present example has light yellow gold surfaces that have mint state luster and a smooth, satiny appearance. Housed in an old PCGS green label, fat letter holder and graded long ago, this 1889 eagle looks very close to uncirculated to us. Do not miss out on bidding on a fresh and rare eagle that has the potential to slip through the cracks. PCGS has graded 18 in AU-55 with 47 finer. The finest known examples are several coins in the MS-62 grade (PCGS # 8715) .

Really no serious marks or scratches to comment on and only a small off-color yellow stain at the right tip of the motto is worth mentioning. This issue is readily available in MS62 and then suddenly has a large population drop-off in MS63. PCGS has graded 174 in MS-62, 28 in MS-63 and a single MS-64 as finest (PCGS # 8720) .

1891-CC $10 Gold Liberty. PCGS graded MS-62. It is always satisfying to observe original gold coins from the Carson City mint. So many coins have been dipped or scrubbed up that it is easy to forget how pleasing the characteristics of original coins truly are. The present example has a definitive contrast between the semi-reflective fields and frosted devices. A small reed mark across the nose is the only mark that distracts the eye from the otherwise pristine condition of this coin. The second C of the mintmark is repunched and obvious. A rich orange-gold specimen that will unquestionably receive high bidding from the experienced gold collector (PCGS # 8720) .

Only 40,000 eagles were produced at Carson City this year and survivors are extremely rare in MS-63 and above. A gem example has never been graded by either PCGS or NGC. There is a scratch in the front of Liberty's face but other than that every aspect of this coin is of mint state quality. Identified by what appears to be a small lint mark just below the last S of STATES. PCGS has graded 16 in AU-58 with only 18 finer, the finest being 2 in MS-64. Additionally, evidence of improper cleaning is noted under the wings of the eagle. Regardless of the impaired condition of this proof, it should still attract interest from bidders who desire an example of a scarce Liberty eagle in proof format at a basal value. 1893-CC $10 Gold Liberty. PCGS graded AU-55 PQ. A beautiful example of this Carson City eagle issue that has managed to keep its originality for all these years. Deep yellow gold surfaces showcase the way these eagles looked when they were produced and aside from some trivial light hairlines, this piece is exceptionally choice for the AU category. This is the final year of production of gold coinage at the Carson City Mint. For the eagle series, only 14,000 coins were produced in 1893 at Carson City and this issue is very rare in the uncirculated condition. In fact, PCGS has graded only 4 mint state examples, none grading finer than MS-62. A superbly original, fresh and choice AU example such as the present coin is a great opportunity for the quality conscious gold collector. Housed in an old PCGS green label, fat letter holder.
